In the late 1970s, Joey Tempest founded the band Europe with his school friend, guitarist John Norum, in Upplands Väsby near Stockholm. They achieved international success with "The Final Countdown," their third album. Europe was part of the popular "hair metal" genre of the mid- to late 1980s, featuring bands like Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. The band split up in 1992 and then celebrated a comeback with its original lineup in 2003. "We've been together longer now than before we split up," says Joey Tempest.
